A-Gas Voluntary Emissions Reduction Project:
The A-Gas Voluntary Emissions Reduction Project tackles the pressing issue of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These potent greenhouse gases have played a role in creating a hole in the ozone layer. This project intervenes by preventing over 1 million metric tons of HFCs from being released into the atmosphere annually. How? By recovering and repurposing used HFCs from refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Our Ongoing Commitment to Sustainable Energy
Our journey towards sustainability doesn't stop with carbon offsetting. We've taken significant steps to transition our offices to renewable energy sources. One key initiative involves the purchase of location-specific Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), ensuring that our energy consumption in 2022 was sourced from renewable energy.

Sustaining Carbon Neutrality in Partnership With Terrapass

Global investment in the clean energy market is set to rise $1.7 trillion this year with solar energy predicted to override oil production for the first time ever.&nbsp;
About $2.8 trillion is posed for global investment in energy in 2023 overall. $1.7 trillion is expected to go to green technologies such as electric vehicles, nuclear power, and storage while the remaining $1 trillion is set to be allocated to fossil fuels including coal, gas, and oil!
According to the latest IEA World Energy Investment Report, increasing preference towards sustainable energy options is strengthened by affordability and security concerns. These concerns follow Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine and are triggered by the global energy crisis. Enhanced policy support through major actions like the US Inflation Reduction Act have played a part, driving momentum within this area.

&ldquo;For every dollar invested in fossil fuels, about 1.7 dollars are now going into clean energy. Five years ago, this ratio was one-to-one. One shining example is investment in solar, which is set to overtake the amount of investment going into oil production for the first time.&rdquo; said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.
</blockquote>
It is anticipated that annual clean energy investment will rise 24% by end of 2023, driven by renewables, compared to a 15% rise in fossil fuel investment over the same period. Over 90% of this increase comes from advanced economies, presenting a serious risk of new dividing lines in global energy if clean energy transitions do not pick up elsewhere.
The biggest shortfalls in clean energy investment are found in developing economies. There are some positive developments, such as dynamic investments in solar in India, however, financing in many countries is being held back by factors including higher interest rates, unclear policy frameworks and weak grid infrastructure.
The IEA and IFC call for more to be done by the international community, especially to drive investment in lower-income economies, where the private sector has been reluctant to venture.
To help address this, the IEA and the IFC will release a new special report on the 22nd June, titled - Scaling Up Private Finance for Clean Energy in Emerging and Developing Economies.

We caught up with CEO and founder of Seven Clean Seas, Tom Peacock-Nazil, to find out, where it all began.

What is Seven Clean Seas and what is it's mission?&nbsp;
<a href="https://www.sevencleanseas.com/">Seven Clean Seas</a>&nbsp;is an ocean impact organisation that my wife and I started back in June 2018. Our main goal was to find a way to enable ocean clean-up projects and really contribute towards removing plastic from the world&rsquo;s marine ecosystems. That mission hasn't changed to this day. Our vision is an ocean without plastic- picture it! We want people to really visualize the absolute amazingness of the ocean and everything that calls it home, and to aspire to help restore that level of magnificence and clarity that our oceans used to have.

As CEO and founder of Seven Clean Seas, what made you start it?
I&rsquo;ve been coming to Malaysia my entire life; I&rsquo;m half Malaysian and I&rsquo;ve always loved Southeast Asia. One thing that has always stood out to me is the level of plastic pollution in this part of the world.&nbsp;A few years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the beautiful paradise island of &lsquo;Kohlipe&rsquo;, off the west coast of Thailand. We spent the entire day enjoying Sunrise Beach and loved it so much that we decided to return the next day, however, overnight a storm had set in. When we returned to the island, there was a floating slick of oil on the usually turquoise water and so much plastic on the white sand beach it was impossible to walk on it. My wife and I thought, we can't fix this problem alone, but we can go back to Singapore and try and raise awareness about it. We chose to do that through the medium of beach, clean-ups back in July 2018. That was really the genesis of everything!&nbsp;

Seven Clean Seas partner with many businesses. How did the partnership with Spencer Ogden come about? 
We work with many businesses. One way we support companies to offset their plastic footprint is through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sevencleanseas.com/plastic-credits">Plastic Credits.</a>&nbsp;The other way is how we link environmental impact to whichever service or product that an organization sells so the business can benefit too. With Spencer Ogden, for example, for each placement made by a consultant, we go out and remove 1kg of plastic from ocean. It's a creative way to create environmental and social impact for an organization, and it's particularly important as a revenue stream for us. Having a plethora of partners, gives us the confidence to grow our teams, hire more people and create environmental impact.

Tell us more about plastic neutrality and what this means?
To achieve plastic neutrality as a business, this means that for every amount of plastic created, an equal amount of plastic waste must be removed from the environment. At Seven Clean Seas, we have a four-point engagement strategy which helps companies that we work with achieve plastic neutrality and become certified plastic neutral. Our biggest partnership to date was in collaboration with the FIFA World Cup, 2020 held in Qatar. We estimated that the event would use 600 odd tons of plastic. To offset this, we removed 600 odd tons of plastic from the ocean, on behalf of FIFA World Cup, to help neutralize their environmental impact.

There are lots of myths out there about plastic waste &ndash; are there any myths you would like to bust?
Yes massively. While most plastic waste
is technically recyclable, that doesn&rsquo;t mean its economically recyclable. Therefore, a lot of plastic that people throw away still finds its way into landfills. There are good and bad plastics, and I don&rsquo;t feel the education around this is quite where it needs to be, therefore people aren&rsquo;t fully informed when disposing of waste. If you can, try to stick to PT bottles when buying bottled water and ensure these are transparent, not coloured or even better, carry a reusable bottle with you! While you're not going to fix the world individually, we don't need 10% of the population doing sustainability perfectly; We just need 90% of the population trying to be a little bit sustainable each day!

How does Seven Clean Seas support local communities?
Working within areas that are underprivileged, it&rsquo;s important that we are doing what we can to empower the local communi
ty. 100% of the people that you see who are employed with us are formally on our payroll with social security such as pension, healthcare, and parental leave. Particularly within the waste management industry, employment can be very informal, so people aren&rsquo;t working within contracts and therefore protected by these agreements. By hiring people in the local area and looking after our employees, we offer financial stability which in turn gives our people the option to invest in their own future whether that&rsquo;s taking out a micro loan, returning to education or eventually moving on from Seven Clean Seas which is our ultimate goal.

What&rsquo;s new in the&nbsp;world of ocean, river and beach cleaning?
The trend of cleaning up oceans is new, becoming popular around 2017 spurred on by a few big documentaries around pollution and plastic waste. The real innovation, starting to gain momentum now is plastic credits! We have an in-house team of sustainability consultants who can go into an organisation and help measure the plastic footprint of an office, product, or event. They analyse plastic waste and make recommendations to reduce the plastic footprint moving forward. Each 1,000kg of plastic that we remove from the ocean or prevent from entering the ocean can generate a plastic credit. Companies can buy plastic credits to compensate for their plastic footprint whilst generating positive environmental impact. This generates the funding Seven Clean Seas need to operate and build new projects.

What are you most proud of?
We employ around 70 people as part of our full-time collection crew in Indonesia. These are people who did not have good economic situations prior to being hired. Now they have full-time jobs on living wages, and they can invest in their future. We ran a social questionnaire which asked our people about the benefits of being employed with us. The answers we received were really moving, for example, one employee was able to put their sister through university and another could help their parents pay off a loan. It&rsquo;s making a real impact to people&rsquo;s lives that I am just incredibly proud of. Of course, the big elephant in the room is obviously how much plastic we've removed from the environment. As of Tuesday 11th, 2023, this is&nbsp;1,208,232&nbsp;kilograms of plastic!

Tom Peacock- Nazil: Transforming our world’s oceans, one beach clean-up at a time

A major trend coming up in energy storage is vehicle-to-grid or V2G storage. Set to be almost as big a contributor to global capacity as dedicated lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro within the next 20 years.&nbsp;
V2G charging enables energy to flow bi-directionally between the grid and the car. This process also allows electric vehicle owners to make money by selling energy from their vehicle back to the grid. A trial programme conducted in the UK involved V2G connected car-owners selling energy from their vehicle back to the grid at a rate of 30p per kWh. The programme concluded that customers could earn as much as &pound;725 a year simply by keeping their cars plugged in when they are not in use.
Studies have shown that V2G could even improve car battery performance. An experiment conducted by the University of Warwick, concluded that the smart grid could extend the life of the EV battery &ldquo;beyond the case in which there is no V2G.&rdquo;
Tesla&rsquo;s CEO, Elon Musk has expressed scepticism about the widespread utilisation of V2G technology. Musk has said that he doesn&rsquo;t think many people will use bi-directional charging unless they have a Powerwall. A Powerwall is a Tesla battery which stores energy, detects outages, and automatically becomes a home&rsquo;s power source when the grid goes down. Without a Powerwall, &ldquo;if you unplug your car, your house goes dark, and this is extremely inconvenient.&rdquo;
All the signs point towards V2G and its anticipated rise to prominence as one of the key contributors of energy storage capacity around the world in the coming years. In conclusion, the ever-increasing number of electric cars on the road means that the failure to widely deploy such technology would represent a blatant oversight in the drive to create a carbon-free society.

The future of energy storage: Vehicle-to-grid technology set to be major provider of storage capacity globally

Harnessing the power of renewable energy has become a priority for many developed nations and the countries, and Europe is no exception. Spencer Ogden were selected by an industry leading corporation to source, recruit, and mobilise high-end technical talent for greenfield wind farm developments. Spencer Ogden became part of the supply chain that was responsible for building the energy provision that was aiming to protect future generations.&nbsp;

High-end technical skills are in serious demand across the entire renewable energy field. An evident lack of qualified talent has caused hiring managers to seach local and internationally based candidates. Europe as a collection of nations also requires high levels of compliance, which creates considerable challenges for flexible workforces. Migrating high-end technical manpower across many different regulations while offering employment solutions that were in line with taxation policies. Spencer Ogden needed to offer an end-to-end solution to overcome all of these project requirements.

Spencer Ogden was commissioned by this client, a solar project developer, who were rapidly winning projects and undertaking the new construction of solar sites that exceeded the bandwidth of their internal workforce at the time. During this period, there was a significant shortage of Project Associates, Assistant Project Managers, and QAQC professionals with experience in the Community Solar Space.
<h3>​Challenge</h3>
The client was seeking a renewables focused staffing partner that had the capability to assist them with sourcing candidates to keep up with the staffing demand led by their fluctuating and heavy project load. In addition, the client desired a method to grow a long-term workforce that could be evaluated in real-time while remaining flexible in costs and overheads.
At this juncture, the client was collaborating with their internal recruiters, referrals, and a few general staffing agencies to help fill the gaps. The Executive Director of Operations and Project Managers required a tailored solution to solve personnel demands.

The client needed a reliable contractor candidate pool to choose from, an efficient interviewing and onboarding process, and a contract-to-hire option at the end of the assignment. During that contract period, the candidates would be on the W2 of Spencer Ogden where all the cost of the employee would fall on Spencer Ogden (burdens, insurance, benefits, and payroll). Not only would this allow for real-life talent evaluation, but it allowed the client to minimize costs during this time.
The Spencer Ogden Northeast Renewables team leveraged their extensive regional network and industry expertise to address all of these issues. This included sourcing and preliminary screening, guiding all candidates through the interview process all the way to offer, full mobilization guidance, and a devoted account management team including all back office necessities.

Vestas were struggling to source a senior management position for its Global Research and Development Centre located in Arhus, Denmark.&nbsp;
The role would play an instrument part in supporting the company&rsquo;s imminent growth plans, and the successful candidate needed a high level of technical expertise. Facing increasing pressure from several key stakeholders, the company&rsquo;s hiring team were in desperate need of a specialist recruitment agency that were capable of filling this imperative position.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cool Earth’s work with rainforest communities builds education and sanitation infrastructure in Papua New Guinea, the Amazon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), prioritising community-led, adaptable support in each location.Our support for Cool Earth intertwine’s with the recognition and reward aspect of our culture here at Spencer Ogden, particularly our internal peer-to-peer PACE recognition scheme. For each <a class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.spencer-ogden.com/our-values?source=google.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-stringify-link="https://www.spencer-ogden.com/our-values?source=google.com" data-sk="tooltip_parent">PACE</a> recognition given globally between peers, Spencer Ogden commits to donating £3 towards supporting Cool Earth’s work in the rainforests. So, every time our colleagues recognise each other’s performance in line with our company (PACE) values, they can be proud to have supported environmental and social change at the same time!<h5>Since our partnership began, we have donated over £9,786; the equivalent of protecting 915 trees, building toilets and sanitation facilities in 2 schools or health centres, or covering enrolment and book costs for over 271 students for a year. Our 2023 goal is to increase our partnership by identifying new ways we can partner to reach our target donation amount of £4,785.</h5>

71% of the earth’s surface is water and 11m tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year. Seven Clean Seas (SCS) build scalable solutions for plastic pollution. Starting in Singapore as a community organisation they now have global reach with worldwide funding towards their pioneering ocean and river cleaning technologies. Spencer Ogden have participated in multiple volunteering programmes, clearing beaches in Singapore and most recently we took part on an impact trip to Batam, Indonesia where members of our team witnessed firsthand the on the ground solutions SCS are putting in place to tackle plastic pollution.This partnership is mutually beneficial to our people, the oceans, and the sustenance of jobs in Asia. We have committed to fight the ocean plastic pollution crisis through plastic offsetting. For every successful candidate placed into a job, Seven Clean Seas will remove 1kg of plastic from the ocean.<h5>Together, we have removed over 10,261kg of plastic since 2021, and have aligned our 2023 target of 6173kg with our corporate growth budget. As we grow, so does our partnership and we look forward to supporting Seven Clean Seas even further in their development.</h5>
