As the world transitions from COP28 in Dubai to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the focus remains on accelerating global climate action. COP28 set a strong foundation, particularly with its emphasis on youth leadership and the first-ever global stocktake under the Paris Agreement. Click

Now, COP29 aims to build on this momentum, with a special emphasis on climate finance and equitable transitions.
One of the standout achievements of COP28 was the institutionalization of the Youth Climate Champion role within the UN climate framework. This move ensures that young voices continue to play a central role in shaping climate policy
1. As we move into COP29, the Youth Climate Champion will be instrumental in driving forward the initiatives launched at COP28, ensuring that the energy and passion of young climate activists are harnessed effectively.
2. COP29 is also expected to address the critical issue of climate finance. The summit will focus on delivering more and better climate finance to the countries and communities most in need
3. This includes adopting a new collective quantified goal (NCQG) on climate finance, which aims to replace the previous $100 billion annual target set in 2009. The negotiations around this goal are expected to be intense, with countries and organizations suggesting targets ranging from billions to trillions of dollars
4. In addition to climate finance, COP29 will continue to emphasize the importance of a just transition. This means ensuring that the shift to a low-carbon economy is fair and inclusive, taking into account the needs of workers and communities that may be affected by the transition
5. The discussions around a just transition are expected to be challenging, with developed and developing countries needing to find common ground on how to share the costs and benefits of this transition. As we look ahead to COP29, it’s clear that the work is far from over. The decisions made at this summit will be crucial in determining whether we can meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and limit global warming to well below 2°C
6. The world is watching closely, and the stakes have never been higher.
